Asphalt Shingle Roof Replacement in Hernando, FL
The Project
This was the largest of the reroofs we completed in Citrus County in August 2026: roughly 37 squares on a home in Hernando, FL. The homeowner did not want the standard specification. They wanted the roof built to hold water out even in the situation every Florida homeowner quietly worries about, which is a storm that takes shingles off and leaves the underlayment as the only thing between the weather and the house.
Our Approach
After a full tear off to the deck and a re nail to current code, we installed a self adhered peel and stick membrane across the entire roof deck rather than the synthetic underlayment that comes standard. This is the single biggest upgrade available on a shingle roof and it is the one worth paying for. Synthetic underlayment is fastened down, so it has thousands of nail holes through it. A fully adhered membrane bonds to the deck and seals around every fastener that goes through it, so a roof stripped bare by wind is still a sealed surface.
The field went down in GAF Timberline UHDZ architectural shingles in Pewter Gray, a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rated shingle whose UltraMat core is built to take a hailstone without cracking, over GAF Pro Start starter at the eaves and rakes, with TAMCO galvanized drip edge and GAF Timbertex ridge cap in the matching Pewter Gray. A tubular skylight on the roof was reset with its own Florida approved flashing kit rather than being sealed over, which is what a lot of reroofs do to a skylight they would rather not deal with.
The job was permitted through Citrus County with a Notice of Commencement recorded before work began, and the roof was installed on August 21, 2026. The county closeout package carried the recorded NOC, the notarized inspection affidavit, in progress and final photographs, and a Florida product approval sheet for every component including the skylight.
The Outcome
The homeowner has a fully permitted roof with a sealed deck under it, a matched GAF system from starter to ridge, and the paperwork to prove all of it. On a house this size the peel and stick upgrade added real cost, and it is the part of this roof that will matter most on the day it gets tested.
