Permits and inspections in Polk County
The Polk County Building Division permits unincorporated Polk; Lakeland, Winter Haven, Bartow, Haines City, Auburndale and Lake Wales run their own building departments, and a Haines City or Davenport mailing address is often unincorporated county. The county application asks for the parcel number and the contractor's licensing, and the Notice of Commencement is due before the first inspection. Polk requires an in-progress dry-in and flashing inspection on the day the roof goes on, booked at least a business day ahead, then a final; either can be in person or virtual, and the in-progress cannot be skipped. The contractor's notarized affidavit is dated the day the roof is finished and has to be on site at the final, with the permit card and the manufacturer's installation instructions. A roof-over that raises the roof 3 inches or more is treated as structural work and needs engineered plans. Inside Haines City limits, where we have roofed, the city's own building department permits and inspects the roof, not the county.
