Asphalt Shingle Roof Replacement in Homosassa, FL
The Project
A Homosassa homeowner in the Sugarmill Woods area needed about 41 squares replaced on a ten facet hip roof, and the job carried something most reroofs do not: an aging pool solar array sitting across one of the planes, with its supply line running through the roof.
The colour choices were specific. Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration in Teak, a brown drip edge, and brown vents. Those sound cosmetic and they are, but a contractor who does not write them onto the supplier order is the reason a homeowner ends up with mill finish galvanized vents sticking out of a brand new brown roof, and nobody notices until it is already installed.
Our Approach
The pool solar came off first and the solar supply line was capped before that plane was opened, so the roof was never left relying on a fitting nobody could reach. The pool cage on the back of the house was covered before any tear off started. Those two steps are the difference between a clean job and a callback about something that was never part of the roof.
The roof came off to the deck, the decking was inspected and re nailed to code, and damaged sheets were replaced. RhinoRoof U20 synthetic underlayment went down across the field in two layers, which is the correct build for Florida rather than the single layer that is standard in most of the country.
Owens Corning Starter Strip Plus was run at the eaves. The field went on in TruDefinition Duration, an architectural shingle rated to 130 mph with Owens Corning's SureNail strip, and the hips and ridges were capped in ProEdge in the matching Teak so the cap reads as part of the roof rather than a different product bolted on top.
Ventilation was built as a system rather than an afterthought. An Owens Corning VentSure ridge vent runs the ridge, two Stampco off ridge vents pick up the areas the ridge cannot reach, and a Kennedy solar attic fan in bronze moves air without drawing power. Pipe penetrations got new lead boots and the goosenecks went on in brown to match the vents. At every penetration the flashing is what keeps the water out, so each one was set and sealed rather than relied on to shed on its own.
The Result
A complete Owens Corning system in one colour family, front to back, on a roof that no longer carries a solar array it had outgrown. Permitted through Citrus County.
